ITV commissions Twofour to make series on British Army’s ‘Road Warriors’
news item

Twofour has been commissioned to produce 4x60’ series Road Warriors telling the story of the men and women who do one of the world’s most dangerous job in the world’s most dangerous place - The Army Truckers.

The Taliban have stated their intention to kill ‘anyone inside any truck carrying goods to the occupation forces’ and the convoys face constant attack via landmines, I.E.D’s, rocket propelled grenades, suicide bombers, snipers and full on ambushes.

Twofour secured extensive access with the MOD to film the Army Truckers in Afghanistan during their busiest time of the year, known as ‘the fighting season’, which was in June and July of this year when tragically 26 British soldiers lost their lives.

The Road Warriors’ cargo ranges from ammunition, explosives and fighting vehicles to sunscreen, bottled water and morale-boosting mail from home. They deliver the supplies and equipment to the frontline by driving across hundreds of miles of hostile territory for 4 or 5 days at a time in convoys that stretch for miles.

The Road Warriors have been followed over many months in Afghanistan as they clock up ‘war miles’ navigating lush valleys, harsh deserts, volcanic mountain ranges, swaying opium fields and bombed out villages amid the intolerable heat of the Afghan summer, encountering both friendly and hostile locals along the way.

It will feature the camaraderie and emotion within the group as they deal with thoughts of being killed or injured in action along with everyday worries about money, home and relationships.

Ian Squires, ITV Controller of Regions and Current Affairs, said: “This series more than any other powerfully depicts the real levels of danger and threat troops in Afghanistan have to endure. Here you have men and women doing an apparently normal job in the most hostile environment in the world. The access we have had has been unrivalled and I hope that as well as getting a real sense of the menace that’s out there viewers will also get some real insight into the nature and character of these very down to earth soldiers who do the most extraordinary things on a daily basis.”

Mark Scantlebury is the Executive Producer for Twofour, Series Producer is Jo MacGregor and Producer/ Directors are David Coward, Caroline Matthews and Greg Williams.

Mark said: “It was an honour and a privilege to work with some of the most down to earth heroes you would ever have the fortune of meeting - The Road Warriors. This series was an incredibly challenging undertaking as the production team was operating on the frontline and in the line of fire for over two months in temperatures of above 45 degrees. We feel the results will speak volumes in telling the story of this amazingly brave, humble and professional group of men and women”
